Greenspan Speaks!

Filed under: Politics — Jaws @ 12:43 pm

The all knowing important economics man, Chair of the Fed. Reserve Board Alan Greenspan apparently spoke today.

Basically, my generation is screwed w/ regards to Social Security and the like.

But otherwise, Greenspan says to cut spending and not raise taxes…
(does this mean things like means testing? Privatization?)

Milk, Cookies and Politics…

[via Political Puzzle] So how do you eat your Oreos?

How The Cookie Crumbles: Poll Reveals Oreo Eating Styles

EAST HANOVER, N.J. (Wireless Flash) — You can learn a lot about a person just by watching them eat an Oreo.

At least, that’s what the folks who make the creme-filled chocolate cookies claim based on the results of a recent survey.

The poll shows folks who dunk their Oreos (about 20 percent of those polled) are more likely to be Republicans, live in the Northeast and make large sums of money.

Twisters, who rip the top layer off the cookie to get at the cream filling, make up 32 percent of the population and tend to be Democrats from the West Coast.

In addition, 45 percent bite their Oreos, and they’re usually Southerners who identify themselves as “independents.”…continued

Unfortunately, I can’t recall the last time I ate an Oreo…but I do remember the first time I had one a few years ago when they finally became Kosher.

On the FMA

Filed under: Politics — Jaws @ 9:55 pm

Okay, I feel like I’m the only blogger out there who hasn’t weighed in on the topic of the FMA. I’ve left comments at other blogs, but not written anything myself–mainly ’cause I don’t yet have an opinion.

Here’s what I personally make of today’s speech:
1) It was a very good political move, as it puts the Dem. candidates on the spot
2) I don’t expect a FMA to arrive any time soon (I’ll explain below)
3) The President doesn’t like activist judges

Focusing on point number two: I don’t expect this ammendment to be able to gather the 2/3rds majorites needed in Congress just yet. Even if it does emerge, who knows how long it’ll take (This is congress people!) Then 3/4ths of the states That’ll take time too.

I think what we’ll see first is at least after May (b/c of MA), DOMA (passed in ’96) challenged in Federal Court. Then the case will wiggle its way up to the SCOTUS. Should SCOTUS at that time decide not to uphold DOMA, then I think the FMA would have a good chance of passing.

Also, remember, that in essence, the President has no role in the passage of a Constitutional Ammendment (Sans political pressure)

Does Drudge Hate Kerry?

First it was that whole Kerry-Intern affair non-story thingy, about a week or two ago–which turned out to be a dud (to put it lightly).

Now it looks like Drudge has been having some fun with Lexis-Nexis:

As Democrats express outrage over comments made by Education Secretary Rod Paige [he called the the nation's largest teachers union 'a terrorist organization'] a DRUDGE REPORT flashback can reveal Democrat presidential frontrunner John Kerry Has Called Republicans ‘legislative terrorists’… MORE… In Jan. 1996, commenting on the federal government shutdown, Kerry called the House Republicans ‘legislative terrorists,’ who used federal workers as pawns and disrespected them. Asked about his terrorist comment, Kerry explained, ‘Terrorists hold hostages, and the Republicans are holding the government hostage’…

Unless Karl Rove is secretly controlling him (which I doubt), I think that Drudge dislikes Kerry even more than Kaus may! If it’s not Rove, could it be Allah, cause he’s got something to say about Kerry

Bernard Lewis is Coming!!!!!!

I just found out that Bernard Lewis, the foremost scholar on the Middle East and Islam, author of 20+ books, and too many other accolades to list, is speaking at Brandeis next month!

When he came last fall (2002) he gave an hour long talk, without notes, and it was captivating and simply amazing!

This time he’ll be talking about:
“The New Anti-Semitism; First Religion, Then Race, Then What?”

Date and time: March 24, 7:30PM

It’s Justice Time!

Filed under: Brandeis — Jaws @ 12:43 pm

The latest issue of Brandeis’ official student run newspaper “The Justice” is out!
Time to see what’s going on at campus now…and maybe poke fun at things here and there ;-)

Let’s start with the headlines (more…)

Brandeis in the Globe

Filed under: Brandeis — Jaws @ 4:30 pm

Just thought I’d share this article from the Globe about Brandeis. Apparently we’re only 54% Jewish now…and we’re diverse and multicultural”.

Look who is coming to Brandeis! Sen. Swimmer!

Filed under: Brandeis — Jaws @ 4:16 pm

Guess who is going to speaking at an upcoming University sponsored conference?

Was your guess Sen. Ted “Swimmer” Kennedy? If you…you’re right!

The Senator will be speaking as part of Brandeis’ Heller School’s 45th anniversary conference on: Rethinking the Social Contract: Examining the Promise of Asset-Based National Policy

Who else is speaking at the conference? Let’s give a quick look see for any noteable names… (No, Jehuda doesn’t count)

Anita Hill (remember her?), Robert Kuttner (Cofounder and Editor, The American Prospect), someone from MALDEF

But wait, ladies and gentlemen, there’s actually going to be a token Republican at the conference! Even better–he’s a “neo-con”! (*gasp*) …it’s none other than William Kristol, editor of The Weekly Standard. Of course he’s only going to appear in a debate, but I’m suprised that they’re having him come.

Sounds like a fun conference, no?

Foot in Mouth Disorder?

Filed under: Politics — Jaws @ 3:16 pm

Well, it looks like someone else may have caught the foot-in mouth disorder that Howard Dean had.

Apparently, in the context of a bad/poor joke, Secretary of Education Rod Page called the NEA a “terrorist organization” . He’s gonna put his foot in his mouth…and I’d assume that he may be forced to resign.

Granted, the Educrats can (and do) cause a lot of problems, but he could’ve chosen his words better.

And speaking of Howard Dean, it looks like he’s in the red. Where did the millions he raised go?

Update: Secretary Paige has apologized, saying:

“It was an inappropriate choice of words to describe the obstructionist scare tactics the NEA’s Washington lobbyists have employed against No Child Left Behind’s historic education reforms…the NEA’s high-priced Washington lobbyists have made no secret that they will fight against bringing real, rock-solid improvements in the way we educate all our children regardless of skin color, accent or where they live.

The NYT hits rock bottom

Filed under: Israel,Moonbats and Wingnuts — Jaws @ 12:41 pm

Guess who has an Opinion piece in today’s issue of the NYT?
Everyone’s favorite America and Israel hating linguist, Noam Chomsky. It’s on Israel’s Security Barrier as a weapon.

I’m personally refusing to read such a waste of ink (nor will I link to the article), because I can all but predict what it’s going to say. The one exception is if someone decides to give it the Full Frontal Fisking that it deserves…then I’ll give it a read.

Note: My insults directed towards Chomsky are in no way meant to insult Nim Chimpsky

Hey Drudge–This Isn’t News!

Drudge’s Current Headline: “Secret Defense Report Shows Israel Owns 82 Nuke Weapons

Uh Drudge, this so isn’t new news! Were you still thinking that the plant was still a “Textile Factory”?

Here’s what FAS has on Israel’s nuclear program (there are links to more sources at the bottom of the page). And here’s something by MSNBC . Also see this page on Avner Cohen’s book “Israel and the Bomb”….

It’s nothing new Drudge! It’s an open secret–even though the Israeli gov’t has a policy of denying it. And for the record, Mordechai Vanunu who formally “outted the program” is a traitor.

Here’s a color spy picture from 2000

A Brandeis Conspiracy?

Donald Luskin points out that in today’s issue of the NYT, Tom Friedman (Brandeis ’75) “praises the long-run advantages of free trade and outsourcing as sources of economic growth and dynamism”

However, in typical NYT fashion, he brings in commentary from Fmr. Sec. Labor and current Brandeis Professor Robert Reich…

I think that Friedman should stick to writing on the Mid-East, at least when he’s doing a good job with it (unlike some recent columns).

Is there some sort of Brandeis conspiracy going on here between Reich and Friedman? One can only wonder…

Update: Looks like the Friedman/Reich idea is a logical fallacy. But it does reflect what the campus “labor coalition” is trying to do on campus…..hmmm….

More on Kerry’s Latest Claim

I know that I made a prior post on this, but since then the story has built up a bit.

Apparently Kerry sent a letter to Bush…what are the odds that Bush actually gets the letter? And if he does, how long till he gets it? One, two months?

Back to the serious side of things (more…)

Military Pr0n!

Filed under: Israel — Jaws @ 10:42 am

It’s that time again! Time for gratuitous military pr0n!

Today’s installment is Israel’s newest aircraft–the F-16i Soufa!

Made by Lockheed-Martin in Texas, and incorporating the best of Israeli and American military technology, the F-16i Soufa will strengthen Israel’s deterrence. Don’t believe me? Just read about it here

And without further ado–the pictures!

Damn it!

Filed under: Israel — Jaws @ 1:18 am

Just as I was getting ready for bed, I opened my email and got word of a bus bombing in Israel.

The bus was on Rehov Keren Hayesod right next to Gan Hapamon (“Independence Bell Park“).

At least 8 fatalities, 62 Injured; 10 Critical; (as of this point in time–I’m watching Israeli TV)

This is really bothersome as I’ve been at this location before–numerous times while in Israel. It’s right near the Inbal Hotel (Formerly known as the Larome Hotel) . Right now there’s also a meeitng of American Jewish leaders at the Inbal.

The “Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade” part of the “Fatah” movement run by Yasser Arafat took responsibility for the attack.
Where this attack took place is a very high trafficked intersection (vehicle and pedestrian)…

Hague or no Hague, there better be some swift and severe retaliation for this!

Update 0245 EST–The death toll is up to 7, at least one person died on the operating table in the OR.

And there were children riding to school on the bus…..

Update 1125EST — Israeli TV is reporting that the death toll is now up to 8. While analyzing the remains, a pathologist discovered that there were the remains of another individual as well.
