Anyone have the video

Filed under: Sports — Jaws @ 11:40 am

Does anyone happen to have a clip of the reaction of NY Jets fans when their first pick in the NFL Draft was revealed yesterday?

They chose…..a Kicker with their first pick!
I can only begin to imagine the reaction of Jets fans to such a decision.

Granted, Mike Nugent (of Ohio State) is an amazing kicker, who is super accurate, but these are Jets fans ater all…

Passover Fun!

Snow–again?

Check out the forcast for Cleveland and Youngstown:

The National Weather Service in Cleveland OH has issued a Winter
Storm Watch.

A late season winter storm may bring heavy snow to Northern Ohio late
tonight and Sunday. Snow will begin to mix with the rain this
afternoon… with periods of all snow… some of it heavy… then
expected from late evening through most of Sunday.

Initially the warm ground will melt the snow… but as temperatures cool toward the freezing point… the snow should start to accumulate later tonight. 3 to 5 inches of snow is possible by daybreak Sunday with a possible storm total of up to 9 inches of snow by late Sunday evening. The greatest amounts will be on higher terrain inland from Lake Erie. Locations near Lake Erie will see considerably less snow.

And what’s the weather like on Long Island?

High 50s and some rain…..oh how I’d perfer that now

On the road

I’m in Youngstown right now…taking advantage of the hotel’s free Wi-Fi access.

I came back to Ohio yesterday and spent the day in the Kitchen back home preparing it for passover. Things literally needed scrubbed from top to bottom in preparation for the holiday. Hence the lack of posts yesterday (let alone lack of interenet access)

Posting will be very sporadic through monday as I’ll be here in Youngstown for passover–esp. with the lack of internet access at the Grandparent’s house.

Happy Passover!

Enjoying work

Filed under: Graduate School — Jaws @ 12:03 am

I had another full day today, most of it spent in the lab. Today was scheduled to be a busier day in the lab, which was good in a sense that I get to learn more new things (in terms of scientific knowledge and techniques), get to do things–so it’s positives all around.

I’m alo finding myself really enjoying what I’m doing when I’m working in the lab–a feeling I’ve not had for a long time with regards to work. I wake up looking forward to the day ahead and what I’m going to be doing.

I don’t think that this type of feeling is necessarily something that’s unique to the sciences either. One of the things I like about science is the constant discoveries that one makes as they work; but I’m sure others have analagous feelings in their work as well.

For those who are curious as to exactly what I’m doing right now…um, le me just say that you’d probably perfer it if I didn’t tell you the details (the gross-out factor). I’ll that I’ll say is for now is that it has to do with Behavioral Neuropharmacology.

Lewis Black as a child wanted to become a rabbi.

Yes, that Lewis Black. The acerbic, fed-up-with-all-forms-of-stupidity, fingers-flailing-in-the-air comedian wanted to be a spiritual leader –The Jewish Week

The thought of Lewis Black as a rabbi?

The rest of the article is very interesting as well

What a day!

Today was, well, an interesting day to say the least. I’d rather not elaborate right now, (I’ll save the story for another day) but I had a whole bunch of new experiences today, and I’m not just talking about learning new lab techniques.

I know it’s only been two days so far, but I’m really enjoying my current lab rotation. I’m really learning a lot and liking it!

Okay, back to the books

In the lab

Filed under: Random Musings — Jaws @ 1:28 pm

So yeah, I’m blogging right now from the lab, using government property (I just like the sound of that). I’ve got some time to kill until my next experiment so why not just write something? (It’s that or grading lab reports–you decide).

I’m really blanking out on what to say. Most blogs and the media as a whole seem to be tied up with the story of the election of Benedict XVI. I’m not really sure what I think about him yet- -I’ve not done enou gh looking into his background. Granted, I’m not catholic either, so it doesn’t affect me much.

Okay, may as well go do some grading.

Passover: What are things coming to?

Filed under: General — Jaws @ 10:56 pm

I was going through the store this evening getting some stuff for passover.

Then I saw this new item…

I mean over the years I’ve seen different for-passover products. From the introduction of Crispy-O’s (a big mistake), to Passover Donut mixes to now Kosher for passover Viagra

But this new item shocked me even more…

Campus Leftists Slander American Hero

Filed under: Moonbats and Wingnuts,Politics,Terrorism/War on Terror — Jaws @ 10:37 pm

Tomorrow, the Stony Brook Patriot (The new Conservative Newspaper) in conjunction with the Enduring Freedom Alliance, Veterans Student Organization, Office of Veteran’s Affairs, Office of the Dean of Students, and Undergraduate Student Government’s President Jared Won is hosting the following event:

“The Liberation of Iraq – A Soldier’s Story”
Featuring: US Army Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Scott Rutter

Lt. Col. Rutter (personal website) most recently led the 2nd Battalion 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division (MECH) in its march to Baghdad during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was the leader of the crucial force held responsible for the capture and renaming of “Baghdad International Airport.” In recognition of his bravery and heroism, he was recently awarded the Silver Star.

For those in interested, he will be speaking at 1pm tomorrow in room 302 of the Student Activies Center at Stony Brook University.

The campus Leftists, have decided to take it upon themselves to protest Lt. Col. Rutter’s visit to campus–and in doing so have also slandered this honorable soldier.

There have been signs (photo) placed around the campus announcing a protest rally scheduled for the same time as Lt. Col. Rutter’s visit tomorrow.

The details and text of the sign are available via the NYC Indymedia website.

While it may not be clear due to the poor camera resolution (I was using my cell phone camera–as I lent my digital camera recently to The Father), the Leftists have plastered LTC Rutter’s face onto the body of the grim reaper. Not only that, but the Leftists outright insult this true American hero.

The protest is being sponsored by the usual suspects, among others, the “Social Justice Alliance”, Grad Student Employee Union, Coalition Against War, Socialist Alternatives and other campus lefty groups (among others).

Sadly, this seems like a common trend that takes place on many a college campus. However, I sincerely hope and believe that the majority of students on the campus don’t harbor the same sentiments as those being expressed by the campus Leftists–and do respect LTC Rutter and other members of the US Armed Forces.

Note: I’m not going to be able to attend tomorrows event, due to the fact that I’ll be working in the lab at the time.

I’ve got a good post coming for later this evening. I’ve just got some (school) reading I want to get done first, then I’ll put up the post.

Note: It has nothing to do with the new Pope, the Church or Andrew Sullivan.

Remember the fuss that the Harvard Crimson put up over “Dormaid“?

Well it looks like Dormaid has some competition in the market, from a company co-founded by a Brandeis alum.

Meet College Bellhop–Not only do they clean, they’ll also do your laundry and even deliver some groceries!

I wonder what the Crimson has to say about that!

Has Meetup.com jumped the shark?

Filed under: General — Jaws @ 12:42 am

Meetup.com has decided to begin charging group organizers a $19/month fee ($9/mo if they sign up now) in order to use the site and its services.

The site, previously free, gained a lot of notariety during the last election season as it brought like minded people together.

But by now charging a fee for usage, has Meetup officially jumped the shark?

Long Day

Filed under: Personal — Jaws @ 12:38 am

Sorry about the lack of posts today, I was only home briefly this morning, till I went to teach lab, came back home and took a nap…which lasted longer than planned. After that it was out to dinner with some acquaintances, and then at long last it was back home, where homework awaited me.

On the positive side, I’m not quite sure what I would’ve blogged about anyway today…

Tomorrow morning I’m planning on formally starting my lab rotation…for real this time! I’m all ready for it…got my ID badge and everything.

The Mother suggested that I should stop by Dunkin Donuts and pick up some donuts for the people in the lab…would that be a nice gesture? What kind of donuts should I purchase if I get any?
(I’m not a donut person–so I dunno these things).
