55MPH Speed Limits?
Econopundit has a post up about an idea the NYT is floating today as a method to conserve gasoline….drop the national speed limits to 55mph.
As expected, the Econopundit does an excellent job thoroughly examining the underlying economics of the proposal (what else would you expect?).
Now, I’ve got a suggestion for the NY Times and it’s editors. Why don’t you venture out of Manhattan, and come out here to Long Island, where we’ve got a 55mph speed limit on the Long Island Expressway (I-495).
I take the LIE to and from the lab every day, and let me just say, that unless there’s some sort of traffic tie up…no one is observing the posted 55mph speed limit–not even the occasional police cruiser one sees. So now tell me, how would imposing a 55mph speed limit save gas again, when basically no one observes it?
