B-B-Q!!!
BBQ Party tonight
We’ve got the Beer (Higlife too!)
Yay!
Looks like my State’s Junior Senator (a.k.a Hillary Clinton) has stated she’ll be voting against Roberts’ Confirmation
As part of her explanation as to why she’s voting against him, she stated:
He wrote that the United States would be far better off with fifty different interpretations on the right to choose than with what he called the “judicial excesses embodied in Roe v. Wade.”
Uh, what about this famous statement from a liberal icon?
It is one of the happy incidents of the federal system, “that a single courageous state may, if its citizens choose, serve as a laboratory; and try novel social and economic experiments without risk to the rest of the country.”
That quote, was from Justice Louis D. Brandeis in his dissenting opinion in New State Ice Co. v. Liebmann (1932)
So what about that idea Senator?
Well, I’ve survived one week here in the Big Apple…
In short, it has both met and defied my expectations. I guess I had this mentality about the city as being a run down and horrible place, like it used to be portrayed on film…that must’ve been then, because the current city is nothing like it.
There are surely parts of the city that I’ve been told not to visit, and I’m sure for good reason.
I’m still adjusting to the NY lifestyle. I’ve learned to cross streets even when the “Do Not Walk” is displayed. I’ve also sort of cushioned myself to the “sticker shock” factor of how much more things cost here (makes me long for Cleveland).
Still trying to find a place to call home…got some promising leads today on that front (don’t wanna jinx myself though).
Also since moving I’ve taken back the habit of drinking coffee…the jury is still out on whether or not that’s good for me.
There’s a really interesting discussion taking place in the comments section over at Brewed Fresh Daily about the impact sports have on Cleveland
Count me among those who follow the hometown teams from afar (Go Tribe! Let’s go Browns!)
Update: And soon after I post this, Pronk hits a 3-run homer! Yeah Pronk! GO TRIBE!!!
From the latest issue of the Brandeis Justice:
Robert Reich testifies on Capitol Hill
”
Reich focused his testimony on a “central moral problem for the American economy today.” He asked: Will the court favor the protection of property or the well-being of the “national community,” that is, individuals suffering in today’s economy who need assistance from the federal government?Explaining the court’s moral obligation to support community over property, Reich pointed to the great inequalities that exist in American society today. “The wages and benefits of women and minorities continue to lag substantially behind those of white men in our society,” he said. “The moral economic values of a single justice can therefore affect the lives of millions of Americans.”"
Uh, Professor Reich–the Supreme Court is not there to resolve issues of financial inequality–that is part of the Legislative Branch’s doing.
I always thought the role of the SCOTUS was to rule on the Constitutionality of laws…not to make laws.
Scientists: Men Dirtier than Women
We needed a research study to tell us this?
Dare I ask who bothered to fund this study?
Thank goodness that film isn’t in the works
but here’s a perspective on the Indians season I’d not thought of: The Indians re-enacting “Major League”
Though I don’t think Hollywood could’ve ever dreamed up a player nicknamed “Pronk”
(Go Tribe! Both the White Sox and Yankees Suck! As did Major League II and III)
WTF is the FBI or better yet Alberto Gonzales et. al thinking?
A war on Porn as a priority?
Okay, now I could understand if they were going after the purveyors of kiddy-porn; but no, they’re going after adult porn. Um, doesn’t the FBI have better things to monitor, like terrorism, the mob, crime rings…?
(Found at Steve’s blog; from a blog called “Mah Rabu”
If Roberts is confirmed, the Brandeis/Roberts station will be named after two Supreme Court justices.
Heh!
Sorry about that….a lot of it has to do with my attempts to apartment hunt…
to no avail
One of the things I”ve already fallen in love with here in NYC is the made to order Salads.
Being a saladoholic, getting to choose your own toppings and having them tossed….yummy. It’s addicting!
(My not so deep thought for the day)
Fox offer to send Mexican laborers spurned
Isn’t the estimated number of illegal immigrants in the range of like 8-12 million? I’m sure within that number we’d already be able to find laborers…no new ones are necessary.
As of typing this today, the Indians are still leading the race for the AL Wild Card, and even more suprising is the fact that they’re just 3.5 games back of the Chicago White Sox for the AL Central Lead!
This is suprising especially since the gap between the two teams was about 15 games back in late July.
So can the Tribe take the AL Central (instead of the Wild Card)?
I’m just hoping that they’ll be playing come October! Go Tribe!
Update: Just noticed that the Tribe and Sox are playing a 3 game series starting Monday, and after that series, they’ve got 3 more matchups!
All I can say is WOW! Watching football on HDTV is simply amazing!
Wow…I can only wonder what watching Hockey on HDTV would be like
Went out last night with some friends to parts of the City I’ve never been to.
We went to Chelsea for dinner followed by a trip to Chelsea Pier.
Then I had my first experience taking a real NYC cab trip (wasn’t that exciting to be honest).
This morning I jumped on the 4 and headed down to 23rd and Park for a Slurpee (and it was good) then I came back up to the Upper East Side and walked around the 92nd St. Y fair this morning.
Not sure what else I’m going to be up to today. Just finished fixing my friend’s internet connection…and well since it is sunday I guess football is in order!
A cheap thrill….
I know the “source” behind this story Kathy Hilton’s Psychic Pet Finder
The Hiltons are just such wierd people to say the very least…
I meant to share this earlier but I’ve been busy.
Study Examines Role Of Cannabinoid Receptors In Alcohol Abuse
A new set of experiments in mice confirms that a brain receptor associated with the reinforcing effects of marijuana also helps to stimulate the rewarding and pleasurable effects of alcohol. The research, which was conducted at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory and was published online September 2, 2005 by the journal Behavioural Brain Research, confirms a genetic basis for susceptibility to alcohol abuse and also suggests that drugs designed to block these receptors could be useful in treatment.

Mind & Brain“These findings build on our understanding of how various receptors in the brain’s reward circuits contribute to alcohol abuse, help us understand the role of genetic susceptibility, and move us farther along the path toward successful treatments,”
It’s fascinating that marijuana and alcohol work on the same class of receptors.

That’s the way I feel right now, so overwhelmed by the city. It’s very different than being in Cleveland.
At the same time though, I’ve enjoyed the walks that I’ve taken. I find that just walking around the streets can be fun as not only do I get excercise, I get to take in all the scenery and see new things.
I usually spend part of my lunch hour walking around as well. I find new places to get food from and I also get to see different areas on the Upper West Side. (That’s where I work).
I’ve also gained a new appreciation for public transportation. I mean I often used the RTA trains in Cleveland, but that pales in comparison to the MTA’s system. I find that taking the subway can be rather convenient.
There’s so much more for me to explore and learn about this city–and I’m very excited about it!
Yes folks, I’m still alive and kicking here in NYC.
Didn’t have time to blog yesterday at the Sister’s, as I went to a dinner with her and hung out with her friends for the night.
Got screwed over royally by a temporary housing agency. The bastards! Brokers are evil!
If there’s anyone in NYC reading this, or familiar somewhat with NYC housing, please drop me a note in the comments! I need help big time!
