With all the news about the retraction of the paper announcing the cloning of embryos in South Korea
Stem cells in disgraced scientist’s paper did not exist: SKorean report
One has to wonder about the bigger picture in all of this. Aisde from the politics of it, what does this say for the whole process of peer-reviewed papers being scrutinized before publication?
How did a paper like this get through the layers of editing?
Yes, I’ve been off work today, ratgher bored to say the least.
I have a DIY project in the works for today though. I’m making some gift bags to take into work tomorrow.
(Everyone else seemed to take stuff in last week, so I figured I could wait till Channukah).
It’s going to involve cooking and the like…perhaps I should take some pictures and share them later?
Man’s Yankees cap almost killed deal
I can envision a similar thing happening with an OSU/Michigan cap in the opposite state during College Football season
AnkleBitingPundits found something interesting in an NYT article about the motives behind the TWU’s recent strike
I still think it’s absurd to demand that workers not contribue at least something towarsd their pensions and/or health insurance. You just can’t get a free ride from the taxpayers forever.
(And yes, the MTA still needs to get itself back in order)

From today’s NY Daily News:
Her husband’s killer: Let’s chat
TEL AVIV – Her husband was slain in the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre. Now Ankie Spitzer says she is being bombarded by requests for a meeting from the terrorist who orchestrated the heinous attack.
“He has tried many, many times to be in contact with me,” Spitzer said of Abu Daoud.
“He wants to meet me, he wants to talk to me, he wants to explain to me that the Palestinians never wanted to do this to the Israelis.” [--this is off the bullshit meter--ed]
I think what Daoud really deserves is not a meeting with Ms. Spitzer, but rather a meeting with some of Israels finest [your choice: IDF, Shin Bet, Mossad]. If you know what I mean

Now if only they could trace the whereabouts of post-it notepads and pens in the office…
Is Su Doku the next Tetris?
Yes, both are addicting, but I don’t know if Su Doku will be as popular in a digital medium as it is on paper. Though perhaps that’s just me.
I’d be remiss to not wish those readers who celebrate the holiday, a Merry Christmas to them, their families and friends.

The Jewish Week:
Jews Wary Of Striking Against Iran Nukes
Granted, these numbers are from an American Jewish Committee survey, but still…..
With all the buzz surrounding the film, I’m really curious to see what exactly Spielberg’s latest work is all about.
I’m going into it with low expectations on the underlying politics of it, but I’m curious to see how the rest of the film is.

I saw Munich last night at a local theater amid an interesting crowd–one with many Israelis in it too
(I could tell by the number of Hebrew speakers I heard).
My opinion of the film basically mirrors those of Captain Ed and Steve Silver
The film itself is very well made, and is worthy of praise. However, it is Spielberg’s attempts at moral relativism and his quest to solve the problems in the Middle East which really bring this film down.
As someone well versed in Israeli History, I also didn’t like how Speilberg played fast and loose with what really happened in the aftermath of Munich IT’s important to remember that the film was only inspired by the events, not a full retelling of the events.
In all, there were snickers from the audience at different points in the film. A lot of laughter at some of the humorous lines, especially about the recipts.
In all–is it worth seeing in the theaters–I”m not really sure

Thank goodness that the TWU has agreed to restore bus and subway service here in the City. The past three days have been a real pain in the behind, especially for those of us who have difficulties in cold weather (see here)
It remains to be seen what kind of deal is ultimately agreeed to between the MTA and the TWU…
I’m just happy to have things back to normal, and looking forward to not being woken up by helicopters at 4am…
