Where have we heard this before?

Filed under: Brandeis — Jaws @ 10:08 pm

Also from the Justice:

Shapiros give $25M

Compare that to Jack Abramoff’s $50 donation in ’02…

(A related aside: the buildings being rebuit are definitely in need of a remodeling/renovating–they’re really, really old. I spent enough time in them during my 4 years…I should know)

A controversy at Brandeis?

I’d file this one under developing…but interesting none the less:

The Justice: Crown [Ctr for ME Studies] fellow scrutinized for ties to Islamic Jihad

The Hoot: Zionist Organization of America threatens boycott

Forward: Brandeis University Faces Threat Of Boycott Over Palestinian Scholar

My quick take: I’ve really got to read the articles above a few more times, then check out the related stories (e.g. the NY Sun piece) before I come to an opinion.

Though the thought of a ZOA boycott of Brandeis seems virtually unfathomable.

Munich: The Real Assassins

Filed under: Israel — Jaws @ 7:48 pm

Did anyone else catch “Munich: The Real Assasins” on the Discovery Channel last night?

I thought it was a well made documentary telling the true story of what took place (unlike the movie) and the interviews with some of the people involved directly in the post-Munich attacks made things even more fascinating.

One thing that I think would be even better would be to have the documentary released on say DVD, with the full-length content of the interviews with the different individuals presented in their entirety–that would just be fascinating.

The sister is planning to participate in the annual Columbia University Dance Marathon, in an effor to raise funds for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation

The Sister is seeking donations so that she can raise the neccesary (Charitable) funds to participate in this event. She’s done it before–and she really will dance for the whole 24-hr period!

If you’d be interested in making a donation towards the foundation and helping the sister reach her necessary sponsorship, leave me a note in the comments with a valid email address which I can contact you at with more info.

Hailing from Shaker Heights, I feel an obligation to decry this proclamation from the Mayor:

Mayor Judith Rawson Declares March National Caffeine Awareness Month

Come on mayor Judy! Say it ain’t so! The residents of Shaker Heights are responsible individuals who know how to handle and control their caffiene intake.

Substantially fewer films will be produced over the next year or two

Does this mean less crappy films will be made? Or will the good films get weeded out instead?

And does this mean an end to the remakes of classics or the making of sequels that aren’t necessary?

Iran’s leader challenges Europe to take back Jews in Israel

The bigger question is: why would Jews necessarily want to return to Europe. Many of the major figures in the original Zionist movement (Hertzel, Nordau, Rothchild, et. al) were from Europe to begin with.

A case of government overreach?

Feds Seek Google Records in Porn Probe

Doesn’t the government have more important things for the DoJ to persue than (adult) porn sites?

As I mentioned a long time ago (in the archives of this blog somewhere), I could understand if the DoJ was doing this to fight against Child-pornography, but this is silly.

Plus were google to five a list of all the searches that are performed on its servers, say on a given day, imagine the volume of data the government would need to begin processing? How would they go about this? I think the NSA’s super-computers are already busy enough as is

Makiya returns to ‘deis

Still on the Brandeis front:

Iraqi exile activist returns to campus after extended leave

Human rights activist Prof. Kanan Makiya (IMES) has spent most of the last four years in his native Iraq gathering evidence and accounts of human rights abuses committed under Saddam Hussein’s Ba’th Party regime.

He returns to Brandeis this semester to teach “Describing Cruelty” (NEJS), which he said explores the importance of remembering and memorializing cruelty. He will also teach a new course on the post-Saddam era titled “War and Reconstruction in Iraq” (NEJS). “It’s useful to take [the course] both for myself and for the students, to sit there and reflect on the last three years,” Makiya said.

These sound like very interesting courses, especially since they are being taught by such a major figure in Iraq’s reconstruction and the documentation of the hussein regime’s torture.

Abramoff and Brandeis

Fellow Brandeis alumnus, Steve blogged this story earlier today, about how Jack Abramoff’s total givings to his alma matter totalled a whopping $50 in 2002.

In a rare twist of events, I happen to agree with the Justice’s Editorial Board in saying that the school should return the money (or give it to charity)

It’s only $50 after all. If the school is that desperate for such a small sum, they should ask Carl and Ruth Shapiro for some more cash.
