Better off running in Jersey?

Filed under: New York City,Politics — Jaws @ 10:03 pm

NY State Comptroller Allan Hevesi is now in quite a bit of hot water after a state Ethics report slammed him for “his failure to reimburse the state for the use of a staffer as his wife’s driver.” (For reference this is an $60,000-80,000 expense).

Hevesi, currently serving as Comptroller is up for reelection this year.

Perhaps Hevesi should consider running for office over on the other side of the Hudson River, as they seem to like corrupt politicians there (or so it seems).

Overeaching

There’s an issue on the ballot back in Ohio (Issue 2) to amend the State Constitution to raise the State minimum wage.

However, there’s more to the proposal than that as you can read here.

Leaving aside the debate over the effect of raising the minimum wage on jobs, it appears the “advocates” and Big Labor who are backing the amendment seem to have overreached with their additional provisions to the bill.

These provisions, which would create extra burdens on businesses, especially small ones, would probably do more harm to the economy than the promised good. Subsequently, these added provisions will most likely sink the amendment.

Bar Mitzvah and Wedding Candy

Perhaps its a sign of having attended synagogue too much…

But the first thing that comes to mind when I hear “Sunkist Candy“: those gummy round-fruit candies come to mind.

The are the candies that were always thrown at synagogue in celebration of Bar/Bat Mitzvahs and Aufrufs (pre-wedding celebration). When I was younger, I was one of the kids on the Bimah who used to collect the thrown candy. And when I turned 13, it became my turn to be pelted by the candies.

A non-endorsement “endorsement”

Over at Q and O, McQ presents a hillarious “non-endorsement” endorsement in the Ohio Gubernatorial race, courtesy of the Findlay Courier from the editorial board.

McQ highlights the best parts of the “endorsement”, which is comical in its nature.

Despite of the lack of an endorsement, the last paragraph does seem to speak volumes:

With Governor Strickland, we’ll likely have another Bob Taft or worse — but with Ken Blackwell we could easily have four years of gridlock, with little or nothing getting done. It’s a poor choice, and one that we’ll have to let local voters make without any recommendations from us.

Seeming that Taft has been an unmitigated disaster for the State, in the case of things, that makes gridlock with Blackwell all the more appealing.

CU Minuteman kicker–a union thug?

Filed under: Academia,New York City — Jaws @ 2:11 pm

Some investigative work by members of the Columbis Spectator appear to have traced down the man seen kicking an anti-Minuteman protester during the melee.

The likely suspect is Kevin Hahulski, “a 26-year-old welder from Queens”.

Mr. Hahulski was previously quoted in a CBS article saying that he was a “Union construction worker”

Now this begs the question–does this guy also work as one of the fabled “union thugs”?

No-win Interactions

This just stems from a conversation from earlier today….Just curious?

1 vs. 100

An interesting concept and idea, or so it seems.

Off the 101 participants though…..

How many of them expected to see Bob Saget hosting a TV show again?
Where’s he been these past couple of years?

“If it moves…tax it”?

President Reagan once said:

“Government’s view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.

Does Reagan’s theory apply to the recently floated idea of taxing “virtual world” transactions?

Would the government in essecne be taxing TCP/IP packets?

Here he goes again
