Went to the Sister’s dance show last night, “Hard cOrchesis” at Columbia University.
Wow–just wow. The show was amazing!
It was hard to decide, which was more impressive, the footwork displayed by the dancers (just watching the feet) or the overall movement and costumes.
The best dance hands down was the African Dance number choreographed by The Sister. (A biased opinion? Okay, well perhaps). The movement of the dancers and the spirit it contained plus the impressive drummer–wow!
The Sister says that there is a video recording being made of the performance–so expect some clips to appear on You Tube sometime in the near future. (Links will naturally be forthcoming).
N.Y. Police Spied Broadly Before G.O.P. Convention
A lot of what the NYPD probably collected was random, mundane information. Most of this probably just wound up on pieces of paper and was placed in boxes in some fileroom somewhere.
Naturally this article is going to provoke much discussion, especially since it’s in the NYT. (Hasn’t the Villiage Voice run similar pieces?) One of the first questions that comes to mind, is how much of the data itself was easily obtainable off the internet? Wasn’t the NYPD acting in both the public’s interest and/or the interest of presidential security?
How many taxicabs are in New York City?
12,779 at last count
It seemed like there were more

The Mom and Grandma are coming to the big city tomorrow, to watch the show that The Sister has choreographed a dance for (and she’s dancing it it too)
Not sure exactly what Mom has in mind to do. Nor do I know what they want to eat (instead I’ve been tasked with “choosing restaurants”)
Posting will thus be light
At Brooklyn Bakery, Kosher Questions Arise Over Matzo
A handmade matzo factory in Brooklyn is facing questions over whether some of the ritual flatbread it produced is kosher enough for observant Jews to use at Passover seders.
In my book, Shmura Matzo is usually of the following features:
1) Round
2) Overdune (read as burnt)
3) Consistency of carboard
Now that’s Shmura Matzo
Herd Mentality? The Freakonomics of Boarding a Bus
First off, taking the cross-town bus during rush hour simply sucks. It’s worse than taking the 6 train during rush hour in terms of crowds and transit time.
Second, in fact, I disliked the Crosstown bus so much, I take 2 trains to work rather than the bus + a train. Sure it means I must walk more than I would to the bus, but the total commute is quicker. (Before “The Company” moved our new offices, I rode cross-town daily.) I’d also rather have to walk further to the train than wait idly in the freezing cold for the bus.
Third–while the linked explanation does make sense…can anyone explain how, despite the general cattle-call feeling of NYC transportation, why people actually line up to board the bus?
Computer technician accidentally wipes out info on Alaska’s $38 billion fund
Pehaps instead of building that “Bridge to nowhere”, Alaska should invest in some better digital backup media.

Obama more liberal than Kucinich, analysis reveals
This determination was made on recorded Congressional votes
Here’s the thing–most of Kucinich’s wackiest, left-of-liberal ideas…never even make it to a committee vote–let alone one that is in the Congressional record.
Inasmuch, the “Most Liberal” crown should still probably Kucinich’s to wear.
The much anticipated charges against three of the police officers involved in the Sean Bell Shooting were unveiled yesterday.
Now here’s the thing–one of the officers fired just three shots was indicited for reckless endangerment for firing in a crowded area. (The other two officers indicted were also with a similar charge, in addition to the other charges).
This seems like quite of a stretch of a charge.
If a police officer believes their life is in danger, shouldn’t they open fire, even if they are in a “populated area”? Naturally, one would want to believe that the police would use their discretion. Perhaps it also means that some officers need to spend more times at the range on their marksmanship.
Doubtful that this last charge will stick. As for the manslaughter and assault charges, those are a totally separate issues.
Disgusting…
Even worse that it was a tabloid TV show who made the discovery (and one of the establishments visited is a Kosher restaurant).
You can throw sums and sums at money at a given project, but it doesn’t necessarily guarantee quality results/advancements.
Even worse is when you direct money specifically at a project that most experts say won’t yiyeld the desired results.
From Newsweek
When the government dangles $1.5 billion in front of scientists, they rarely say, oh no, please, keep it, there are better ways to spend the money. But as the biomedical establishment gears up for yet another megaproject, some leading scientists are doing exactly that, making the heretical suggestion that this latest extravaganza is poor science and bad policy.
On a related note, increased funding can always be a great boost to a quality project

Hooters heading for Holy Land
No, it’s not going to be Kosher either…..
Can it succeed in a country where Starbucks failed?
Pirates seem to be on the decline, but not at the hands of Ninjas.
Rather, it appears that the rise of P2P networks and other file sharing.
Nonetheless, the blanket vendors are still at the subway stop I use on a nightly basis. So business can’t be that bad.
Film reviewers, moviegoers disagree
Ultimately, it’s the moviegoers who count, as they’re the ones who bring in the cash, no?
Nagin Suspects a Plot To Keep Blacks Away
Perhaps the crime rate plus the lack of infrastructure may be keeping people away?
The only conspiracy here would be the one Nagin’s using to keep his political power.
March: N.Y. Storm Strands Passengers on Planes
Feb: NYC Fliers Stranded on Planes for Hours
At least JetBlue learned its lesson cancelled all their flights ahead of time (this time around). Other airlines though….
