Company

Filed under: Politics — Jaws @ 10:41 pm

Got company over tonight….more of the sister’s friends
(No, I can’t keep track of ‘em)

And I’ve had a horrible case of DOMS all day from yesterday’s leg day. Ouch!

Veterans as Lab Rats

This is a quite disturbing story of how the VA is using veterans for clinical trials.

From the allegations in the article, it seems like the VA is ignoring GCP and ICH guidelines as far as the trials go. Do they not have an IRB overseeing these studies?

Are the veterans not warned about the potential side effects before consenting to the study (as they’re supposed to be)?

Shame on the VA for giving the field of clinical trials a bad image.

Firefox 3

Just downloaded Firefox 3

The new UI is a lot sleeker looking than the previous version. Going to take some time to get used to all of it, but may as well “kick the tires” so to speak.

Film worth seeing

Alas, why must we wait 11 more months?

Father’s Day Card Conundrum

Filed under: Personal — Jaws @ 8:52 pm

Every year I try to get my dad a father’s day card.

It’s not an easy task.

Thing is, my father doesn’t:

–drink beer (or any other alcohol)
–play golf (though that’s a funny mental image)
–Do any of the other stereotypical card things

So this year again, I had to visit a few stores, but I found him a card. Much better than the good for nothing sister who didn’t get him anything.

A must visit

Filed under: Moonbats and Wingnuts,New York City — Jaws @ 8:50 pm

Usually any entity that manages to bring the loonies out to protest it merits a visit.

In this case, it’s Bruce Willis’ new wine bar on the Bowry.

Heck, I usually avoid places like snooty wine bars, because they’re, well, snooty! (nor do I drink…) This place sounds like total win!

R and R

Filed under: Personal — Jaws @ 6:07 pm

The sister is giving me grief for having done “nothing” this weekend. Little does she appreciate how nice it is to just rest and relax for a day or two after 5+ busy days at work.

Outages

Filed under: New York City — Jaws @ 10:41 pm

The cable (TV and Internet) went out here for ~2h during the storm. Aren’t cable lines run underground?

Of course, attempts to call TWC to find out what was going on, were met with a busy signal. Sigh.

Suckering Tourists

Filed under: New York City — Jaws @ 8:49 pm

Expedia is apparently advertising overnight stays in Manhattan for as low as $58/night

The things tourists can get suckered into here is just shocking. Perhaps it’s just a small segment of the tourist population who buys into these things, or purchases a street corner Rolex, but is it right to prey on such people?

Rained In

Filed under: New York City,Personal — Jaws @ 8:34 pm

It’s storming here, big time. I was planning on going out to see a movie this evening. However, since my primary method of transportation is on foot and there’s a lot of thunder and lightning about–that’s probably not a good idea.

Shocking News Day

Filed under: General — Jaws @ 8:53 pm

Obviously the big news of the day was the unexpected death of Tim Russert

Then R. Kelly getting acquitted?

Graduation Day

Congrats to the Little Brother who walked across the stage this evening for his High School Graduation!

Pictures forthcoming (if the parents figured out how to use the digital camera properly)

Punked on Al-Jazeera

Great article about how an Al-Jazeera journalist gets -p0wned by an Israeli professor.

Of course, there’s a YouTube clip as well

If only all of Israel’s Hasbarah was this good.

Beyond the Hudson

Filed under: New York City — Jaws @ 8:50 pm

One of my coworkers is headed to the Southern part of the Midwest for a trip with her fiancee.

Before departing, one co-worker (a native NYer) said that she should go “try the buffalo”, and implied that buffalo is some sort of Midwestern delicacy.

Meanwhile, I had to interject and say that you can buy Buffalo here in NYC too! Heck, the Kosher butchers even sell bison!
And were one to venture down to Chinatown, you can get any sort of animal.

Sometimes the natives need to get a better grasp about what goes on beyond the Hudson River.

More gym annoyances

Filed under: Fitness — Jaws @ 9:18 pm

Fark picked up on a Newsweek piece about wierd gym behavior [LGT Fark thread for the comments]

Making a grilled cheese on the sauna rocks? That’s wrong and disgusting on so many levels.

Coincidentally the NY Post also ran an article on the same topic

Me–I do none of the offending things. Heck, I even rack my weights and wipe up!

Strangely missing from the article was the sin of squat/power rack curling. Ugh. It’s verbotten!

It’s going to be a long campaign

When people have started to focus on inane issues like Obama’s Birth Certificate (McCain has already gone though this) or his bike riding fashion (and who cares?)

It’s going to be a long, long, long general election (as if the primaries were not bad enough)

Broiler Room

Filed under: New York City,Politics — Jaws @ 8:55 pm

Today was a nightmare.

Outside it was a hot 97+ degrees (and that doesn’t include the Manhattan effect)

Inside at work, one of the HVAC units was broken. In layman’s terms: No air conditioning.

No AC all day, it was rough….too rough. Not to mention all the other craziness.

Then when it was time to go home, I went to the N/R/W stop as usual. Once there, I found out that because of a stalled train in Queens, the N and W weren suspended heading towards Queens. (I take the N/R/W to Lexington for the 4/5 train). After waiting for a while, and no R appearing, I decided to hop a Q down to 42nd St. That meant Times Square (blech!) Caught the shuttle to Grand Central, got an uptown 4 and was on my way. But it was so hot out!?!?!?

Tomorrow’s forecast looks no better
