Something to be proud of?

From Mark Kilmer’s “The Sunday Morning Talk Shows – The Review

On Fox New Sunday:

George Washington University president Steve Trachtenberg boasted that at GWU, not only are the faculty and students disarmed, but so are the campus security officers.

Is this something to really be proud of?

(For that matter–my alma matter is still the same way…which isn’t right either)

The visuals are cool enough, however, it’s depressing that the Tax Code is so complex.

Organizers call off Mideast visit

The planned trip to the Palestinian territories this summer has been cancelled because of the failure to raise the necessary funds and campus support, one of the group’s organizers said.

Let’s see, since Brandeis’ student body is approximately 50%+ Jewish.

The “Palestinian Territories” are basically run by Hamas and/or Fatah. (No friends of the Jews)

So if you’re Jewish, your odds of making it there and back safely are how low?

No wonder the trip couldn’t be pulled off…

Finkelstein to not visit Brandeis?

Interesting development via The Hoot:

“This week, the Radical Student Alliance (RSA) pulled out of the event concerned that they would be associated with “Holocaust denial” and their anti-war campaign would be put in jeopardy. Soon after RSA pulled out, the Arab Culture Club (ACC) pulled out as well, afraid that they would be going at it alone and that they would look like a fringe group that even RSA would ignore. The decision of the two groups has forced the lecture to be canceled yet again.

More Mid-East Controversy at Brandeis

Via The Hoot:

Crown Center fellow under fire for paper

Dr. Khalil Shikaki, a senior fellow at Brandeis’s Crown Center for Middle Eastern studies, has recently generated controversy over his support for the release of Marwan Barghouti, a former Fatah leader who was convicted in Israel in 2004 of five counts of murder, as well as one count of attempted murder. Shikaki has been the head of the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research since 2000, and is considered a world expert on the field of Palestinian public opinion….

Brandeis’ Intellectual Identity Crisis

The far-far-far lefties at Brandeis have decided to invite Israel basher and (in my opinion totally repulsive “intellectual”) Norman Finkelstein to campus.

From the Jewish Week: Tentative Date For Israel Critic At Brandeis

What if any intellectual value Finkelstein would add to the University is questionable.

At the time of this post, it looks like the necessary funds have been allocated as well.

Regarding the allegations that Alan Dershowitz declined a debate with Finkelstein at Brandeis, should be viewed through a separate lens. Deshrowitz and Finkelstein have a “history” with each other (see Wikipedia’s: Dershowitz-Finkelstein affair). A debate between the two would have been intellectually fruitless, and a complete waste for the university, both in terms of intellectual and financial (cost) value.

Carter at Brandeis–The After Action Report

Filed under: Brandeis — Jaws @ 10:07 pm

Don’t have much time to cover it right now, but here’s a start of the stories on Carter at Brandeis:

The Justice has the most coverage

And then there’s this story:

father of Alisa Flatow ’96,
who was murdered in Israel by Palestinian terrorists not long before she
was to graduate from Brandeis, was privately discouraged from attending
the talk at Brandeis by Jimmy Carter out of fear that he’d ask a
question that might embarrass the former President.

Shameful…

Carter at Brandeis

Filed under: Brandeis — Jaws @ 10:18 pm

At long last, President Carter appeared at Brandeis today.

But Carter, who has said he wants to have a “discussion” about his book would neither debate pro-Israel Law Professor Alan Dershowitz nor take any questions from the audience.

Rather, all of the questions that Carter will be answering will have been pre-screened and chosen ahead of time.

For contrast, when some of the speakers who the Campus (Far) Left deamonized, came and spoke, such as Daniel Pipes, David Horowitz and Bernard Lewis, the latter fielded questions from the audience. (And in the case of Pipes and Lewis totally intellectually shut down the Far-Lefties–some of whom are behind the Carter invite) .

Still in my opinion, Brandeis was not the proper forum in which to have Carter speak about his book.

Dershowitz will still probably wipe the floor with Carters “arguments”.

Brandeis caving to Carter’s supporters?

(via Steve Silver)

Carter agrees to speak at Brandeis–Will face questions, not debate, on book

Ironically, this comes out in the news the same day as the report of 14 members of the Carter Center board resigning over the same book.

Then the Boston Globe decides to put in this quote to its article:

The invitation to Carter also triggered questions about how open the predominantly Jewish campus is to views critical of Israel.

Besides the fact that the school has previously provided a forum other individuals not so friendly to Israel (Chomsky quickly comes to mind)–it’s important to draw a distinction between being “critical of Israel” and being outright dishonest. Furthermore, exhibiting poor scholarship in ones work should not be rewarded or recognized by a University (especially one that constantly harps on “Integrity”).

/Still think Dershowitz would’ve wiped the floor with Carter in a debate.

Clueless Brandeis Profs for Carter

Filed under: Brandeis,Moonbats and Wingnuts — Jaws @ 10:21 pm

Can’t say this story about the alma matter comes as much of a surprise, but nonetheless:

Brandeis group pursues Carter visit

The group is probably the same group of far-left professors who like to make noise about every little thing they don’t agree with. Look at all the noise they made about Daniel Pipes and Bernard Lewis visiting Brandeis to speak. (Search my archives for those stories).

Even more ironic, these same professors are some of the ones who led the charge that prevented the late Jeane Kirkpatrick from receiving an honorary degree from BrandeisLGF Thread

The rationale behind this was problems of *drumroll*….alcohol intoxication.

This comes on the heels of the cancellation of ModFest .

Any semblance of University sponsored fun left?

Five Years After 9/11: The State of Our Freedom and Security

Brandeis alumni mark the 5-year anniversary of September 11th, with a lively and thought provoking presentation and discussion.

Had to go to the “old” office yesterday, to pick up some stuff to take to the “new” office.
(We’ve still got one department at the “old” office, but that’s just for a few more months).

The old office is literally right next to Columbia, so yesterday, despite the downpour there were students moving in and I saw it first hand.

Nothing like Opening Sunday at Brandeis mind you. (Things run much more smoothly in Waltham).

As for advice to the new Columbia students…um….there’s a good chance you’ll run into The Sister (she’s the social one in the family)–but if you’re a guy, don’t even think about it…..I’m still the older brother.
