Blizzard Blogging–Update

Filed under: Old Posts — Jaws @ 5:42 pm

I’ve got the CBS2 on right now, and they’ve got the Suffolk County Executive on…and apparently we’ve got a declared “State of Emergency” here in the County since 1:30pm today!

Woohoo!

The guy is telling everyone to stay home and off the roads (duh!) It’s not like the newscasters haven’t been saying the same thing over and over for how many days now? And do people really not have any common sense?

Blizzard Blogging

Filed under: Old Posts — Jaws @ 7:16 pm

I’m getting myself all ready for tomorrow’s big winter storm

I too am right in the red part of the map.

I’ve got my materials handy to make chicken soup. I’ve got two movies from Blockbuster and there’s always the internet and cable TV.

The only thing I’m missing is a shovel (but I’m gonna go run to the store and get one).

Otherwise, I’m all ready! Bring it!

The real purpose of vacation

Filed under: Old Posts,Random Musings — Jaws @ 12:14 pm

Is the real reason for vacation from school for kids to come home and teach their parents how to use the computer/internet (or to fix the computer)?

Oh give it up already!

Filed under: Old Posts — Jaws @ 12:00 am

I saw this in Today’s Cleveland Plain Dealer when I was flipping through it this evening:

Kerry backer questions Cuyahoga recount

John Kerry’s presidential campaign criticized the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections Wednesday night for its handling of the presidential recount and said some parts of that recount should be conducted again.

I think that there are people on both sides of the election who’d just like to take a ClueBat and whack some sense into people like this/

Random Thoughts

Filed under: Old Posts,Random Musings — Jaws @ 10:27 pm

Random thoughts for this evening:

Why is one of the aisles at the local Path-mark have the following description year round: “Passover Foods”?
Those who’ve tasted passover food know that one week of these foods are often more than enough.

I’m still not understanding the whole fruitcake or “Jewish rye” thing.

I can’t believe this story Stalin’s Admirers Celebrate 125th Birthday (it’s not from the Onion either)

Bookstore Ettiquite

Filed under: Old Posts,Random Musings — Jaws @ 4:23 pm

Okay, this is something I’ve long wondered about, and I’d like to get some feedbacl on it:

Say you happen to be in your local bookstore, like a Borders or Barnes and Noble, and this bookstore has a coffee shop within it.

Is it allowable to take a book off the bookstore’s shelf and then just sit yourself down with a cup of coffee and page through/read the book/magazine, even if you have no intention of purchasing the book/magazine?

A random factoid

Filed under: Old Posts — Jaws @ 4:36 pm

Here’s a random factoid for you political junkies out there:

This year is the first time Stark County (Canton, OH) didn’t go for the Presidential winner.

Normally Stark Co. picks the president.

Granted, the two major GOP supporting companies in Stark Co. were Timkin (outsourced jobs and laid off many workers) and Hoover (shut down most OH operations and moved to IA).

But it’s a random thing.

Rather leaves

So Dan Rather is finally leaving…..
This is after his ratings have plummeted, and well, the whole network news buisness is struggling to say the least.

What took him so long?

And what’s Bernard Goldberg gotta say about it?

Could it be?

The Red Sox just won! They swept the Angles 3-0!

Will the Sox be heading to the Metrodome next (Minnesota)?

Or Could we see a rematch of last year’s ALCS? Yankees vs. Red Sox?
If so, I’ll be able to say that I’ve experienced a Yankees-Sox series on both sides home turf….

We’ll have to wait and see….

Glad I’m not in Cleveland right now…

[h/t Mark Kilmer]

Plain Dealer: City sideshow: hoopla, hubbub

and that’s just the opening of the circus…

From the AP: Teachers, anti-war protesters to crowd debate host’s campus

To put it in context, the city of Cleveland laid off teachers (even though they have one of the worst school districts in the nation), and 200+ police officers and 100 firemen last December.

Outside the debate may be more interesting than what goes on inside….

Polls is Polls

Filed under: Old Posts — Jaws @ 7:01 pm

I just happened to turn on Special Report with Brit Hume and he was talking with his panel (Barnes, Kondrake and Liason tonight) and he reported the finding of three polls released today: Zogby, Pew and ABC News….and suprisingly Bush is ahead in all three of ‘em–and by a commanding amount in some of the internals

I don’t understand these polls at all. Polls is polls

The VP Debate

Filed under: Old Posts — Jaws @ 6:34 pm

Tuesday night VP Cheney and Sen. Edwards are going to be facing off in the VP debate at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.

I’m wondering–will this debate even really matter? The Cleveland Plain Dealer says it isn’t vital but it’ll be notable. And how many people are actually going to watch it–as on the same night, Baseball Playoffs start….which would likely draw a lot of viewers away. I don’t think I’m actually going to be watching it either, as I’m going to a Hillel event that night.

Here’s a list of predicted zingers and responses that may be seen.

Nevertheless, to Cleveland, as this debate is a big deal as they want to showcase the city (good luck with that one)…more thoughts on the VP debate as the days progress.

Memo to the DNC

Filed under: Old Posts — Jaws @ 7:32 pm

pssst….hey, DNC honchos, yeah–you.
Your whole little advertising campaign for the GOP Convention, you know the “Mission not-accomplished” one?

Haven’t you bothered reading Gen. Tommy Franks’ book American Soldier or listened to any of the interviews he’s given since the book’s publication?

That sign wasn’t Bush/Cheney/Rove et. al.’s idea–much to the contrary–it was General Frank’s idea!

The General believed that the specified mission of combat was accomplished (which it was).

You may want to go back to the drawing board and think up a new slogan quickly so you don’t embarass yourselves too much.

School Days….School Days….

Filed under: Graduate School,Old Posts — Jaws @ 6:17 am

I’ve got my first day of Graduate classes today, after one final orientation event,

It’s back to school I go!

Update: Well the orientation wasn’t as bad as the others have been. Somewhat repetative again….and long (9am-1pm) but it’s over with.

Problem is I found out that not only am I TAing a lab course, so I have to attend the lab lecture (which I expected). But I also must sit in on the physiology course itself two days a week! Blah! Jeers!

The nature of Political Discourse

Filed under: Old Posts — Jaws @ 12:25 pm

I meant to point out this post by OF Jay yesterday, on the nature of current political discourse.

Jay then has a continuation of the piece here

I constantly have varying thoughts on this subject, and I should try to type them out and share them at some point–but for now, go read what Jay has written..

I can’t believe they sell these

Filed under: Old Posts,Wierd Side — Jaws @ 4:08 pm

From the Target website:

Kabbalah Red String 25.99

This is probably the craziest thing I’ve seen in a long time. First off, why would one pay so much for a simple piece of string? In Israel, especially in the Old City of Jerusalem, there are many old ladies who hand these to youngsters for free.
Second–I’ve got a gripe with this whole “Kaballah” craze. What you see/hear from hollywood is such a false representation of this mysticism…in traditional Jewish circles there’s a saying that “one shouldn’t study Kaballah until he has reached the age of 40″–why? Because being any younger and studying it would make one insane….I guess that explains a lot of hollywood though….

More thoughts on the convention

Filed under: Old Posts — Jaws @ 10:52 pm

Amount of time I’ve spent watching the Dem convention to date: 0:00
I agree with Dan Rather (that’s a shocker):

‘If we were on for 3 hours a night, in a lot of places a test pattern would get better ratings’…

I’ve made a real quick trip through the blogsphere and hope I’ve caught up on the day as a whole. I’m cautiously optomistic that tomorrow won’t be as hectic for me….let’s hope. (No doctors appointments are scheduled either–a good sign)

Did crazy man Bill O’Reilly really have a talk with Michael (insert name here) Moore? I gotta see the transcript of that one!

But I’m falling asleep as I type…it’ll have to wait till tomorrow
